For 30 days you eat:
-no sugar
-no grains (flour, corn, oats, all of that)
-no dairy
-no legumes (including peanuts, which aren't actually nuts)
So basically you can have:
-fruits
-vegetables
-meat
-eggs
-nuts
If you're thinking "that sounds impossible. why would you do that?" don't worry, I did too, and still do to some degree. I was very reluctant to start this because frankly I just didn't want to do it, but my roommates peer pressured me into it, ha. It was MUCH easier doing it with my whole house because we could motivate each other and everything in our fridge was compliant. We shared groceries, because it was stupid not to. We went through 6 dozen eggs every 5 days or so, maybe 20 bananas in that time, etc...we literally were at the grocery once every other day or so. It was very difficult at first because we had to read a lot of labels-anything with added sugar of ANY kind or preservatives was out. So that was kind of frustrating. We also had to be specific about cooking oil, so we used coconut and olive oil to cook with.
I ate a LOT of: eggs, avocado/guacamole, big+chunky applesauce from Trader Joes, LARA BARS, almond butter...
The first week was VERY hard because i felt very fatigued. I was having major headaches from caffiene withdrawals and was in a bad mood the entire time. After that, it became a little easier, but not ever enjoyable. Especially since it was summer, some days I just really wanted a slurpee or frozen yogurt or something cold other than water and frozen fruit.
Interestingly enough, it wasn't the sugar or dairy that was hard for me. I thought it would be, because I have a BIG sweet tooth and love cheese, but I don't think I ever really craved those things that much. The hardest thing for me was the grains...some days I felt like I just needed a littleee piece of bread or something for extra energy, because I was lagging. Also, I'm not a big meat-eater at all...which made the month VERY hard. I literally had to force myself to eat meat so I had some fat/protein going into my body.
Oh, I also craved cereal. Like every day. That's what I wanted.
It was also hard to be cooking so much. Especially dinners, because some nights we would go straight from work to something social/meetings/church/etc and didn't have time to go home and eat. So dinner that night would be a Lara Bar or 2. Doing Whole30 requires a LOT of time and prep, which was also a hurdle.
Also, toward the end, I just got bored with everything I was eating. Nothing sounded good at all, and so somedays I just wouldn't eat that much. Which didn't help matters.
Here's my final verdict...doing whole30 was an interesting experience for me. I don't think i'll be that strict again with my eating, because I believe in moderation and that grains and dairy have a place in my diet. But, aside from traveling and a binge here or there, I've already started eating less grains/dairy/sugar and eating more fruits/veggies/lean protein as part of my daily diet. The experience forced me to eat healthy and get to the point where my body was actually craving healthy foods.
So, i'm glad i did it but...NEVER AGAIN. lol
here are some meals i would make...

sauteed eggplant, mariana sauce, olives; watermelon |
we were doing this on National Donut Day, which is depressing because we love donuts. so we tried to make Whole30 approved donuts with almond flour, applesauce etc...they were okay, tasted more like muffins or something. CLEARLY WE WERE DESPERATE.
one day i got a 2 yolk egg! so cool.
i actually only did a Whole25 because i wanted to stop before i went to Boston for Caity's wedding. ha! let me tell you...the first sip i took of this soda was HEAVENLY. like, i think i actually heard angels singing. i was standing there like a weirdo smiling in the 7-11. i missed you old friend.
its good and necessary to eat healthy and be good to your body. but its also okay to have a small indulgence.
the end.
