Well...my boys did it again! NL EAST CHAMPS!!! After a year hiatus we were back in the postseason for the second time since moving to DC in 2005. After a 96 win season, national writers began saying the Nats were their favorite to win the World Series. The team was more stacked than two years ago. More experienced. Dominant pitching, explosive, consistent hitting, good defense...we looked poised to actually make a World Series run.
I of course immediately started planning on going to the home games. The Nats had home field advantage, which meant they would play games 1, 2 and 5 (if necessary) at Nats Park. I wasn't able to go to game 1 because I was working, but game 2 was on a Saturday at 5:30pm. I made plans to do what I did two years ago, and stand in line for standing room tickets the morning of game day.
the box office opened at 10am, so i got there around 6:30. it wasn't that cold, which was nice, and the brief drizzle didn't even bother me. R called me and we chatted for about an hour, and then when i told her the camera from Fox5 was panning by, she turned on the tv and saw me! hahaha.
i ran home to go get our couch out of the storage unit with Marissa and bring it back to Arlington. after THAT whole show was over (oy), R came over and i got ready for us to go to the game! i put on all red, because, that's the only way to go. we got there around 4:30, staked out a good place to stand on the top deck and waited for the game to start. it was windy and i was already getting a little chilly, but didn't think much of it...the game was fine, until the end when Drew Storen (again...) gave up a run. we were now tied at 1, and went in to extra innings.
now. extra innings is fine, but not in the postseason when all you want is for your team to win and get it over with. ESPECIALLY when it feels like -10000 degrees outside with a 300 mph wind gust. IT WAS SO COLD. people who weren't there don't get how miserable we were...we were anxious, which makes your mind and body exhausted, we were emotional, we were cold. it. was. awful. after the 8th, R and I had moved down to the lower concourse to find a place to stand that might shelter us from the wind. we eventually would move every inning or so to find a better place.
yes. we stood the whole time. with exception of the 15-18th innings, where we sat on the ground for the Giants half of the inning, and stood back up for the Nats half.
and then in the 18th, the Giants got a homerun and we never came back. it was devastating. we had been at the stadium for almost 8 hours, and left with a heartbreaking loss. down 0-2 in the best of 5 series. UGH. no words.
except...my boyfriend Rendon had a GREAT game. really the only National who was hitting at all, the entire series. love him.
And then, as you all know by now, we won game 3 in San Fran and lost game 4 last night, meaning we're done for the season.
This feels like a different heartbreak from 2012. That game 5 loss at Nats Park was completely awful. I will never forget how soul-crushing it was. We had made the playoffs for the first time since the team was in DC, we had that AMAZING game 4 walkoff homerun from Jayson Werth (to this day the most amazing baseball moment ive seen in person)...we were excited. This year, we had expectations. We KNEW we could win. We had the talent and discipline and experience. And it just didn't work...
But you know me. I will always always always love this team. always.
