So, I go to New York City a lot. Which is kind of funny because I lived on the East Coast my whole life and didn't go for the first time until I was 20. But now I go all the time-for day trips or long weekends or short weekends or however long. The first time I went I was with Kash, who grew up in Queens, and we stayed with her cousin and his wife on Long Island. It was such a FUN TRIP and I fell in love with NYC.
Back in June the roommates were talking about going to NYC for a weekend in July. We found one that worked with everyone's schedule and planned to go. Marissa's mom Paula is a flight attendant for United and is currently based out of LaGuardia, so we were able to stay in the apartment she rents out by the airport. We were a 10 minute walk to the terminal, short bus to the subway, subway ride away from Manhattan, it was so nice!
But then we found out from our landlord that he was selling our house, and if we were out by the end of July he'd cut our rent in half. So we started looking for places. We were having no luck finding a place that would fit all of our needs and desires and it was becoming very, very, VERY stressful. moving really is the worst. We were thinking about cancelling this trip if we couldn't find a place, and then two days before we were planning to leave, we all agreed on a place we had been debating on and put down our deposit. Next up was packing...responsible adults may have cancelled their trip anyway so that they'd have time to pack, but. We aren't those kind of people. Our hashtag for the weekend was #weshouldbepacking. but really. We should have been.
since i had Fridays off before Natalie went to kindergarten (seriously best job ever), i was able to go down Thursday night with Mars and H and Whit came up on Friday night after work.
basically all we did Friday was eat. im not joking. we started the day off in Brooklyn, eating ice cream from Ample Hills for breakfast. that pretzel cone was deeeeelicious.
then we went to Dough and got doughnuts. duh.
then we took the subway over to Lower Manhattan and shared a hot dog from Crif Dogs. YOU GUYS. if you remember from last Fourth of July, it took me 3 years to eat a hot dog after i got food poisoning from a corn dog at the Utah State Fair...so i was cautious about this. but IT. WAS. DELICIOUS. one of the best things i ate this day. this one we shared was WRAPPED IN BACON AND DEEP FRIED, then topped with teriyaki sauce, pineapple chunks, and green onions on top. omg. getting so hungry thinking about it.
a cheetoh macaron from...i can't remember.
yummy cone from Big Gay Ice Cream. i can never pass up sprinkles.
Laduree, of course.
after some shopping in the East Village, we had dinner in Little Italy. we split a white pizza and this amazingggg pasta dish with a cream sauce. oh my goodness. soooo good. i also found my street. :)
our last food stop of the day was at il laboratorio del gelato. i thinkkkk this is blueberry and cinnamon. it was GOOD.
and then of course i had to make a picstitch of all we ate that day.
finally H and Whit's bus arrived and after getting a little confused on the Subway, we made it back to Queens.
Saturday was all about food again and Broadway. we went and stood in line to rush for tickets for the night time showing of "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder", which won the Tony for Best Musical. Whit's brother was in NYC for a while doing a training with Goldman Sachs, so he hung out with us most of the day (hashtag fifth roommate).
RE2PECT.
we subwayed to Brooklyn and then walked across the Bridge, which is one of my favorite things to do in NYC.
H went to her matinee show and the four of us went on to Chinatown to get dumplings and sesame pancakes and OMG THEY WERE SO GOOD.
then we got ice cream from some where i cant remember...
andddd doughnuts from Doughnut Plant. ohhhhhh my goodness, this fresh blueberry doughnut was out of this world. so so so good. for reals.
after this we were all dying and needed a break from food, so we subwayed up to Central Park and walked around for a while and then shopped down 5th Avenue, looking for this skirt in my size because i wanted to wear it to my sisters wedding. no such luck...
then we stopped at Sprinkles ice cream, which i was sooo excited about because i've been wanting to go forever. when it first opened in Bev Hills, Jessica and i said every time i visited them that we were going to go and try it and we never made it. so i was excited to have it here. soooo good.
then it was time for our play! it was hilarioussss. the music wasn't anything special, but the acting was incredible and it was very entertaining.
we stopped at Stardust Diner and i got a bacon bowl filled with mac and cheese. yes, this happened and it was delicious.
the next morning we rushed for tickets to "Les Mis", then Mars, H and i got cheesecake from Juniors.
"Les Mis" was INCREDIBLE. im always blown away by the music.
we got intense ramen, which i actually LOVED.
by this time it was about 7 or so, and we still had to drive back to DC, so we took a cab back to Queens to get ready to go. Mars parents were both there, so we chatted with them for a while and then we were off! but wait...not so fast. we stopped at Ample Hills to get ice cream again. it seemed appropriate that our trip was bookended by visits to this place, because i think its the best ice cream ive ever eaten. no lie. also the chocolate chip cookie cone was incredible.
We didn't get back to DC until 3am, but the trip was soooo worth it. I feel very blessed to live with this ladies. We always joke about how it was the best thing that they got robbed last August at the Avalon, because I had a week left to find roommates for my townhouse, and it just worked perfectly that they had a place they could move into right away.
Now we just had to go home and start packing...stay tuned for that fun.
